Council’s summer pool season makes a splash

March 29, 2018

The Moira Shire has released statistics for the 2017-2018 outdoor pool season.

The 2017-18 summer outdoor pool season has drawn to a close, with Moira Shire recording a big jump in attendances across its six facilities.

The combined attendance number recorded at Moira Shire swimming pools in Yarrawonga and the Yarrawonga Foreshore Waterslide, Numurkah, Cobram, Nathalia and Strathmerton was 57940 over the season that started in December.

This was a rise of 6147 or 11.2 per cent on the 2016-17 season.

Moira YMCA recreation facilities manager Marcus Maher said the success was a result of the effort and commitment of local YMCA staff teams at each facility, combined with some consistent warm weather over the holiday period.

‘‘We provided employment for 45 local people over the six facilities this season, with 90 per cent of those aged between 18 and 25. The enthusiasm and effort of these staff teams was outstanding and helped create a really positive environment at all the outdoor pools,’’ he said.

‘‘We had a good run of hot weather in January and the pools were very popular places during those days. We offered reciprocal rights to all Moira outdoor pools for season pass holders so, if it was hot and you were near any of the pools, you were always welcome to cool off.’’

Mr Maher said extra effort was made to make the pools fun and popular places to be by running events and special programs at the outdoor pools.

‘‘All pools had a number of days hosting the pool inflatable which was very popular with families,’’ he said. ‘‘We also ran successful Dash-and-Splash events at Nathalia and Numurkah, along with a movie night (Nathalia), pool parties (Numurkah, Cobram and Yarrawonga) and aqua aerobics (Yarrawonga).’’

Swim lessons were offered at two sites, with Nathalia hosting a 10-day intensive program in early January with 140 students taking part. Yarrawonga ran two swim lesson programs — a 10-week program on Thursdays and Saturdays and a 10-day intensive program in early January. The combined attendance for both programs was 194, which was up 21 per cent on the previous season’s 160.

Mr Maher said the results were pleasing to all involved and acknowledged the partnership between the Moira Shire Council and the YMCA as a key to the successful season.
