Cobram Secondary College Year 11 student Ellie Jones joined four others from Moira Shire to participate in the Lions’ Youth of the Year Region 4 finals in Yarrawonga on Sunday, March 4.
Representing Strathmerton Lions Club, she won the Public Speaking Award for her speech addressing the issues of youth.
The judges commended Ellie on a confident and passionate delivery of a challenging and thought-provoking topic which sought to address the demonising of youth in modern mass media.
She challenged the audience to question why society had allowed this to happen and sought people’s partnership in re-engaging youth to help find solutions to the complex issues facing our modern community.
As part of the public speaking component of the competition, Ellie was required to deliver two impromptu responses.
The topics sought Ellie’s views on what local government could do to engage with youth and what she would do if she was the prime minister for the day.
Limited to two minutes for each question, Ellie shared her thoughts about a lack of public transport in the local community to support youth engagement and the need to address the ongoing treatment of asylum seekers in Australia.
Ellie thoroughly enjoyed the experience, particularly the 30-minute interview which allowed her to share her aspirations, love of volunteering and views on key local and national issues.
