Sign design approved

The current Welcome to Barooga sign will soon take on a new lease of life.

After more than 12 months of consulting and debating, designs for Barooga’s new town welcome signs have been finalised.

Barooga’s new signs were the last of the four Berrigan Shire towns to be completed, after Tocumwal’s signs were installed last May, Finley’s finalised later in the year and the Berrigan designs signed off in December.

Berrigan Shire general manager Rowan Perkins said the hold up with the Barooga selection was the result of ‘‘divisive’’ feedback from the community consultation process.

Council has taken advice from the Barooga Advancement Group and selected the ‘sun and sport’ slogan and concept.

The 3m-high entry signs will showcase a sports and river theme, with ‘Welcome to Barooga’ also appearing on the signs.

Barooga-based councillor John Bruce put the design recommendation to council at its recent meeting.

He said it was supported by 15 Barooga Advancement Group members and was only a slight modification on the original design concept provided to council by an external designer.

Cr Bruce said the river aspect was added to the design to reflect the opinions showcased in a community vote on sign designs in November last year, which saw a river and gum trees design receive more votes than a design promoting purely sporting pursuits (145 to 45).

‘‘The first meeting that was held, it was agreed the sports theme was the preferred sign,’’ Cr Bruce said.

‘‘However, at the second meeting a different group of people came along and agreed strongly for the river and gum trees.

‘‘This design still reflects on the nature concept that was presented to the community. It incorporates nature and the sports that Barooga is famous for, but keeps it simple.

‘‘Keep it simple was the suggestion and that’s what we did. I think it’s a winner.’’

The new concept design for Barooga will now go to council for adoption, as part of the Barooga Concept Plan, at its meeting on March 21.
