The Sallan Realty Victorian Combined Horse Driving Championships are coming to Koonoomoo this weekend.
Koonoomoo Recreation Reserve will host some of Australia’s best carriage horse drivers as they compete to be crowned Victorian champion.
Event secretary Merryn Byers said the action was amazing to watch.
She said it was the third time Koonoomoo had hosted the event and described it as a ‘‘great coup’’.
Saturday’s competitors will battle in the dressage phase, where the beauty and elegance of horse and carriage will be on show. Many of the top carriage horses and ponies in Australia are entered in the championships.
Sunday will see the drivers put their skills to the test in the marathon 18km event as they navigate their way around the testing course set by designer Rob Robertson.
The horses and ponies’ fitness will be put to the test in the precision driving phase on Monday.
There will also be tandem events on offer for spectators in which one horse runs in front of the other in a true show of agility and teamwork.
With 48 drivers from various states and territories having nominated for the event, competition is sure to be fierce among riders and these highly trained horses and ponies.
Competition starts at 9am each day.
