The Barooga Hotel has continued its trend of giving back to the community, this time donating $500 to the Barooga Botanical Gardens Committee.

Barooga Hotel licensee Kath Gardiner said the money was raised through a number of raffles, which the pub does once a year to support a major community cause.

‘‘It’s really just about giving back to the community because at the end of the day, they are the ones buying the tickets, so it is going towards their benefit,’’ Mrs Gardiner said.

The money generously donated by the pub will go towards more picnic tables in the gardens, as well as contributing to the committee’s fundraising efforts for a new fountain.

The garden has been a constant source of pleasure for the Barooga community since it opened in 1993.

It was designed by Vanessa Ranken and built solely by volunteers.

It has been nurtured by the original committee ever since.

Mrs Ranken described its progress over the years as a ‘‘fantastic little community effort’’.

‘‘A lot of retired people especially have spent many, many hours and many years regularly mowing lawns, regularly watering the gardens, pruning and promoting it,’’ Mrs Ranken said.
