Rise Above will be held next month to honour the memory of Cobram’s Amanda Grennan and raise awareness of mental health issues.
Amanda, 14, died in August. To honour her memory, her friends have banded together to educate people about the importance of mental health.
The day will involve a variety of activities including music, guest speakers, a raffle, a jelly eating contest and a fashion show and aims to capture Amanda’s fun-loving personality and love of fashion.
There will be free admission for the day and entry for contests, with plenty of prizes to be won. Fashion show entrants are encouraged to wear black and white and something blue.
There will also be an open microphone for anyone wishing to sing, a dance show and class and food and drink stalls.
Amanda’s friend Amanda Spratt initiated the event and organised it with help from Trevor Woodhead and Jem Houzaife.
Ms Houzaife said the day would promote a holistic approach to mental health.
‘‘Proper mental health requires help for people with all aspects of their life, so they can live a fulfilled life,’’ she said.
‘‘I don’t believe there is one fix for mental illness.’’
There will be guest speakers from Lifeline, Riverina Bluebell, Ignite Life Church and Health and Lifestyles Retreat Berrigan.
Community service providers will also be available on the day for support.
Raffle tickets can be bought for $2 each or three for $5, with all proceeds going to Amanda’s family.
‘‘Amanda’s family want to spread a message of kindness and caring for one another,’’ Ms Houzaife said.
‘‘We have to be careful of the words we speak to each other — they have an impact.
‘‘There has been a lot of sadness from suicide, depression and bullying in our community.
‘‘Everyone, especially in small country towns, knows of someone affected by mental health issues.’’
The event will be held on November 4 from 9am to 4pm at Cobram’s Federation Park.
