Cobram Roar held its second annual Legends match on Sunday and it drew a bumper crowd to Scott oval, one of the largest seen at a soccer match for many years.
People travelled from all over the state to play or watch and be involved in the day, which felt more like a school reunion as many laughs were had throughout the day.
The match started at a high intensity that didn’t last long as the Muscara Blues dominated the early stages and scored the first goal of the match through Vince Macheda.
Ollie’s Yellows then stepped it up a gear, even though a few extras may have found their way onto the field as they managed to equalise through a cracking strike from Alessandro Artavilla.
The match then evened out as the midfield was non-existent and the old long ball game came into full effect as players started to drop, with Matt Santoro and veteran Giovanni Mantovani leaving the field injured.
Some bad refereeing from Angelo Ballerini unsettled the game as there were more cards being handed out than at Christmas, with both Orlando Artavilla and Santo Muscara given their marching orders for being the shortest players on the field.
With the match ending in a draw it came down to a penalty shoot-out and both keepers Darren Vallente and Charlie Gattuso made some fantastic saves before Phil Muscara had the deciding penalty saved by the high flying Gattuso in goals to win the match for the Yellow side.
It was a fantastic day for all involved and there would have been some sore boys on Monday morning.
