A group of Yarroweyah footballers will take a walk down memory lane this weekend as they celebrate the 40th anniversary of their premiership-winning game.
The Hoppers seconds team defeated Barooga in the grand final of the Picola District Football League on Saturday, September 24, 1977.
The victorious side will come together on Saturday to celebrate and reminisce with a barbecue at Yarroweyah at the last match of the home-and-away season when the Hoppers host Blighty.
It was a strong fourth-quarter finish which saw the Hoppers secure the trophy 40 years ago, after leading Barooga for most of the game.
The final score was Yarroweyah 8.6(54) to Barooga 7.4(46).
Goal kickers for Yarroweyah were Bill Jones and S. Kennedy with two each, as well as A. Stewart, R. Church and W. Marks.
Best for the Hoppers were Jones, T. Codling, J. Codling, P. Foster, C. Newnham and Marks.
‘‘Although the Grasshoppers were controlling in the air, the tenacity of the Barooga small men was able to keep them in the game,’’ a match report from the game read.
‘‘David Smith was giving Barooga good drive from the centre, but the Yarroweyah defenders formed a rock-line defence.
‘‘Both sides strived desperately to gain a break in the second quarter but to no avail.
‘‘Barooga was able to make better use of their scoring opportunities in this quarter and at half-time trailed Yarroweyah by two points.
‘‘With Bill Jones, Jim and Ted Codling getting on top of their opponents, Yarroweyah gained control with a couple of goals.
‘‘The last term proved to be Yarroweyah’s best as they raced to a winning lead with three goals.
‘‘Barooga ruined what chances they had of winning the flag when they missed a couple of easy chances.
‘‘Yarroweyah took advantage of these misses and held on to win by eight points.’’
