The annual Battle of the Bands is heading for town and will see local bands going head-to-head, with the incentive of a $500 cash prize for the winner.

Buses will be running from across the shire to allow young people to attend.

Cobram Anglican Grammar School student and guitarist Sean Browning said he was excited to be participating in the Battle of the Bands.

‘‘It’s awesome — it’s good to have an event like that around,’’ Sean said.

‘‘We did it last year in Yarrawonga and came second in that one — hopefully we can do better in this one.

‘‘If we win, we’ll move onto the next level and see how far we can get.’’

The action will unfold at Cobram Civic Centre this Saturday from 6pm.

The music event is one of the regional competitions organised by FReeZA Push Start, a Victorian Government initiative.

FReeZA Push Start is an annual Battle of the Bands competition, showcasing young musicians aged 15 to 21 from around Victoria, giving them the opportunity to perform, gain local exposure and win their way to a spot on the Push Over Festival line-up.

The program incorporates 87 youth-music FReeZA committees across Victoria.

Grand final winners receive a major prize as well as other benefits such as recording, mastering and publicity.

Bands appearing at this year’s battle will include headline act The Vanns, from the NSW south coast, and last year’s winner The Squid Doctors, from Corowa.

Local acts competing: The Delirious from Cobram and Numurkah; Jake Willett, Yarrawonga; River Loizou, Cobram; Compromise, Cobram; and Vicious Rumours, Shepparton.

The Battle of the Bands is a drug, smoke and alcohol-free event and children aged 12 years and under must be accompanied by an adult (no pass outs).
