Outstanding: James Whatman received his award at an event earlier this month.

Muckatah’s James Whatman was awarded the Outstanding Student Award for Diploma in Agriculture at Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE’s industry celebration earlier this month.

GOTAFE’s National Centre for Dairy Education in partnership with Dairy Australia hosted the event, which celebrated the successful completion of qualifications by students.

Prior to his diploma, Mr Whatman completed a Certificate III and Certificate IV in Agriculture and is now looking towards completing his bachelor degree.

‘‘The reason I finished the diploma was so that I could go on to do the bachelor degree by distance at CSU Wagga,’’ he said.

‘‘My family has been on a farm near Cobram for 20 years now so after I finished school I started going to TAFE while working there.

‘‘I am working for my uncle at the moment part-time while doing the degree full-time.

‘‘I never thought about being an outstanding student. But it was a nice surprise when I was awarded it.’’

Mr Whatman hopes to one day go into dairy nutritional consulting.

‘‘After my degree I will hopefully do some work experience, as I have a fair few contacts in the industry,’’ he said.

‘‘But hopefully after my three years at university I’ll be able to start consulting.’’
