Round four of the Riverina Tour Series was held at Chiltern on Sunday with Cobram’s Heath White out to defend his series lead.
Christian McDonald was also entered, riding off the scratch mark.
White finished best of the Cobram riders in 16th place with scratch a couple of minutes behind.
This leaves White still in the series lead with one round remaining in a few weeks’ time.
●Nine riders braved cool conditions on Saturday for the club’s 28km handicap.
Three bunches were made with Rene Mol and the-in form Bernie Gillespie off the 9 minute limit mark.
Nick Torney, Iain Davidson and Yarrawonga’s Murray Crawford shared the 4.30 min block mark with Tony Crawford, Christian McDonald, Travis Lindhe and visiting rider Stan Thomas from scratch.
With a slight tailwind Gillespie and Mol worked well together, reaching halfway in 22.20 min, followed by Torney, M. Crawford and Davidson who made up two minutes on the limit markers.
The four-strong scratch bunch were flying, reaching halfway in 18 mins (46.7km/h average).
Into the headwind, the middle bunch worked well to catch limit but were ultimately caught by the flying scratch bunch with about 5km to travel.
Coming into the last kilometre, Lindhe provided the lead-out with McDonald poised to take his second fastest time honours in two weeks.
He didn’t have it all his own way though, with Shepparton’s Stan Thomas kicking well to the line but McDonald proved too strong, crossing the line first in a slick time of 38.47 mins (43km/h average).
Thomas held on for second with Davidson, 43.41 mins, finishing third in his first ride back in a few months.
Murray Crawford and Nick Torney filled fourth and fifth positions respectively in a strong ride.
●Next weekend sees the Hume Veterans and GV Veterans clubs holding a ‘double header’ on Saturday and Sunday, so no club racing will be held.
