Keeping the community spirit alive in Katamatite

April 12, 2017

Jessica Lorraine will perform at Katamatite's Easter celebrations this weekend.

Katamatite will be hopping with entertainment as part of an Easter egg-stravaganza this weekend, with its Easter Saturday Family Fun Day.

The day is an initiative of the Katamatite Community Social Foundation, which is a merger of the Katamatite Community Foundation and the Social Club following the closure of the town’s pub several months ago.

The Social Club had always been a social causes and assistance fund, but in recent times had become more of a social events group through the pub, rather than a philanthropic group.

The Katamatite cricket and football clubs felt the group’s service to the community was important and thus created the Foundation; and with the remaining Social Club members wanting to continue their philanthropic roots, the two merged to continue to support the community that supports them.

Katamatite Community Social Foundation secretary and Katamatite Cricket Club president Catherine Pool said the event was a celebration of the merger for the community.

‘‘And, as the community has come together so strongly in recent months, to get together and have a good time together, with some fun for the kids; after all, we are a very family-oriented community,’’ Mrs Pool said.

She said the foundation would distribute its first funds to recipients on the day, which will be ‘‘fantastic’’.

‘‘That was the whole point of our venture and the merger — giving back,’’ she said.

‘‘And the Social Club had always provided a family Easter event for the community so we are keeping that alive too; just revamping it a little.’’

The event will have talented musician Jessica Lorraine perform, as well as a sausage sizzle, Easter egg hunt and an Easter hat parade with prizes.

‘‘(Jessica is) amazing,’’ Mrs Pool said.

‘‘She won the busking competition at last year’s Katamatite Big Day Out in a Little Town — she was right next to the Katamatite Cricket Club stall so we were privileged to listen to her all day.

‘‘She will provide a beautiful atmosphere for Katamatitans to have a wonderful, leisurely Easter afternoon together.’’

●The Easter Saturday Family Fun Day will be held at the Katamatite Community Rooms from 1pm, with live music from 3pm. It’s free for Social Club and Community Foundation members and a gold coin donation for others, or $5 per family.
