The designated firewood collection area at Cobram East will close at midnight today (Wednesday, March 22).
High public demand has exhausted the planned supply of firewood at the collection area.
The nearest open designated firewood collection area for Cobram residents will be at Barmah.
Details of the collection areas can be found at www.ffm.vic.gov.au/firewood
Parks Victoria Northern Rivers district manager Daniel McLaughlin said the amount of firewood taken from the area needed to be monitored.
‘‘Domestic firewood from designated firewood collection areas on public land is a limited resource that needs to be managed without impacting forest health,’’ Mr McLaughlin said.
He said Parks Victoria rangers and Forest Fire Management Victoria staff would continue to patrol firewood collection areas as well as forests, parks and reserves to make sure people abide by the closures.
‘‘We encourage people to do the right thing and use other nearby open designated firewood collection areas.
‘‘On-the-spot fines and heavy penalties apply to people collecting from closed areas. Penalties including imprisonment can apply for serious offences.’’
