Our very own sports stars and their families and friends gathered last week to recognise the outstanding achievements of the sporting community in the past year.
The Barooga Sporties/Cobram Courier Sports Star of the Year awards were held on Thursday night at Cobram Barooga Golf Club, recognising those who have made a significant contribution to sport.
Master of ceremonies Mick O’Dwyer invited nominees to speak about their achievements, where the past year had taken them and what they hoped to achieve in the future.
The individuals spoke passionately about their sport and their clubs, with most making mention of coaches, family and friends who were supporting them on their journey and a number who were also supported by sponsors.
Barooga Sports Club board vice-president Stephen Brooks said the variation and talent in the different sports recognised on the night amazed him.
‘‘I’d like to congratulate every nominee for the awards, you’ve been successful in just being nominated tonight and we wish you all the best for your future endeavours,’’ Mr Brooks said.
The night also honoured Hall of Fame inaugural inductees Brodie McIntosh (pistol shooting) and Dion Sullivan (barefoot waterskiing).
Both have won the senior award three times, which means they are ineligible for future nominations.
